Olive Damsel Nymph (Variation) |
This is a variation of the popular green damsel nymph so common in our still waters. It is usually tied with a figure of eight eyes directly behind the eye of the hook, but in this pattern a small glass half tube is used. This pattern was tied for our club by a guest fly fisher and I have used it being successful on each occasion when fished. You can weight it if you prefer, in usual manner with lead weight behind the eye of hook. This pattern differs to the demonstrated damsel on our club night simply because I did not have the same materials our guest tyer used, which goes to show, experiment with your flys! |

Steps. 1. Select a hook and debarb. Before fixing the hook in the vice, slip the red bead over the point and slide it to the eye. 2. With the bead tight against the eye of the hook, wind on a few turns of thread ,then apply a small drop of super glue to hold bead firm against eye of hook. 3. Carry the thread down the shank and catch in a few strands of cock hackle or deer hair on top of hook above barb area. I do this to stop tail wrap) 4. Catch in 5cm of fine fuse wire on side of hackle, and continue to tie in a good pinch of marabou olive over the top of cock hackle at this point. (if you have good marabou you could use rope method to continue with body)
5. Dub on a pinch of olive fur and wind it on as thin as possible to thorax start, try to taper body up towards the head. Half hitch off thread and wind in rib wire in opposite clock direction of dubbing turns. Tie off and now make a dubbing loop with your thread to dub thorax.
6. Now dub in the thorax trilobal and make your loop fairly tight so as to give your head area a good buggy look when wound on. Tie off behind the bead.
7. Pinch off the marabou tail about half the shank length. Dont cut!

How to fish. If you use a floating line use a weighted nymph or un weighted with intermediate line. Place nymph in channels between weed beds and count down to required depth then start retrieve with fig of eight.
