Peeking Caddis

 

Intended to imitate a cased caddis larvae.

Size 12 or 14 wet fly hook Cream-colored thread .0 15 lead wire

Size 18 black dry fly hackle Cream-colored raffia (swiss straw)

Put a layer of thread on hook from eye to bend.

 

Tie in wire near bend of hook, wind forward 2/3 length of hook. Cut. off.

 

Wind thread over wire front to back to lock in place. Wind thread over the length of the hook to create a reverse-carrot shape, where the thicker part of the carrot is towards the

rear of the hook.

 

Tie in hackle at the BACK of the hook, behind lead wire, near the bend Apply 4-5 turns of hackle, tie off with thread and trim excess.

 

In front of hackle, tie in a strand of raffia. Wind thread to eye. Wind raffia forward to near the eye. Tie off. Half-hitch the thread and cut off.

 

Apply head cement to the knot.

 

Note: The raffia may create lumps or ridges as you wind it forward. This is OK, as the raffia imitates the case. which is often not symmetrical

Fish under a dry fly or strike indicator in streams where cased caddis are present.
