Green "Wooly Bugger" (sub-surface fly)

Tied by Sandy Lyons

Recipe

Hook  Size 8 straight shank
Thread 6.0 Olive thread
Body Green and Black stripped Chenille
Tail Olive Green Marabou Holographic Flash
Rib Grizzly hackle
Eyes Bead chain for the eyes
Wrap thread around shank of hook several times to lay a good base, start at the eye and work down to the curve of the hook and then back up to the eye. (I like to make sure that the hook is mostly covered). Stop with the thread right before the eye. Take the bead chain eyes and attach by doing wraps over the shank of the eyes. Wrap back down to the curve of the hook. Next I take the Marabou and lay it on top of the hook, the end of the feathers should be just past curve. Taking the part of the feather that is by the eye in my fingertips, I move that down to the curve of the hook. I then wrap the thread around the Marabou to secure at the curve. I then wrap the Marabou around the shank of the hook towards the eye to give my fly some body. Wrap the thread up towards the eye to secure the Marabou to the hook. Wrap thread a couple of times behind the eyes to secure feather and then clip the rest of the feather off. Next attach flash to body of fly, ending with thread at the curve of the hook. Attach grizzly hackle with a few wraps and then attach Chenille with a few wraps. Take chenille and wrap around shank of hook, stop at the eyes. With the thread do several wraps up the body to secure the chenille, stop at the eyes and secure chenille by
doing a couple of wraps right behind the eyes. Clip chenille. Take the hackle and wrap up to the eyes and secure hackle by wrapping 2-3 times. Clip hackle. I then did several finishing loops and clipped the thread, then applied a couple of drops of head cement.

To fish this fly, I cast and let it sink then slowly pull in. Pause again to let it sink and then do another slow pull, and repeat this pattern.
